The union representing workers in the garment industry has issued news that it will request an increase of the minimum wage of textile, clothing and footwear manufacturers by 11.59 US dollars in 2021, which is a 6.1% increase.

On September 3, 2020, Cambodia held a meeting at the Ministry of Labor to determine the minimum wage in the textile, clothing and footwear industries in 2021.

Several unions have expressed that they will require the Ministry of Labor’s Minimum Wage Committee to increase workers’ basic wages by $11.59.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Labor, Mr. Ith Sam Heng, and the meeting was chaired by the Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, Yi Senxing, with representatives from the government, labor and management.

So far, the minimum wage for Cambodian workers in 2020 is US$190 per month.

In May of this year, unions including the Cambodian Labour Confederation (CLC), the Cambodian Garment Workers Democratic Union (C.CAWDU) and the Cambodian Tourism and Service Workers’ Federation jointly sent a letter to the government, requesting the government to ensure that employees on leave pay during the epidemic. Can receive 60% of salary.

At the same time, the letter also suggested that the government increase the minimum wage for garment workers from US$190 to US$250, and implement fixed wages for workers in the construction, tourism and transportation industries, and hotel services.
